ITV The Durrells It may have disappeared from our screens, but there is good news – next summer you can relive all the romance, drama and simply spectacular scenery on your own.
That’s right, you will be able to follow in the footsteps of Louisa, Gerry, Larry, Leslie and Margo on a visit to one of the best Greek islands to visit, Corfu. For a truly special trip, you will be hosted by naturalist Lee Durrell, wife of the late Gerry.
His book My family and other animals, which described the family’s stay on the idyllic Greek island in the 1930s, became an instant hit and remains a favorite among children around the world.
Hosted by actors Keeley Hawes, Milo Parker, Josh O’Conner, Callum Woodhouse and Daisy Waterstone, the ITV show rekindled our love of all things Greek.
For the fans who miss The Durrells, our exclusive vacation to Corfu in 2020 offers a wonderful way to celebrate the much-loved series. Here’s what to expect …
The Corfiot adventure begins in the island’s capital, where you’ll check into the stylish adults-only Mayor Mon Repos Palace hotel, and enjoy an evening cocktail with Lee Durrell – your first chance to meet a member of the famous family.
She will give a talk on the legacy of her late husband Gerald and tell you about her longtime love for Corfu.
Highlights for the next few days will include a cafe in Corfu Town‘s famous arcaded avenue, Liston, with David Ashcroft, who runs the annual Gerald Durrell week and gives you a guided tour of Corfu Old Town.
It is full of architectural gems that reflect the past domination of the Greek island by the French, British and Venetians, as well as many places beloved by the Durrells.
You will also see Mouse Island, a small island in the bay south of Corfu Town that you will no doubt remember from Gerald’s first book, My family and other animals.
From here you can see its chessboard fields – a swamp rich in wildlife – and the location of the original Strawberry Pink villa.
Visiting the east coast of the island will give you the opportunity to see the picturesque Kalami and the White House, the former home of Larry and Nancy Durrell.
You’ll be able to explore the area where Larry and Nancy swam and picnic, and Lee will talk about the area’s ties to the Durrell family. You will also see the “Lac des Lys” (known locally as Lake Antiniotissa) from My family and other animals and Lee will give a short read of the book.
A final highlight of Corfu will be Old Perithia, an ancient deserted village in the north of the island. Here you can walk the abandoned streets and buy delicious Corfu mountain honey.
Towards the end of your trip, you’ll cross the Ionian Sea to Albania, arriving at the pretty resort town of Saranda, before heading to UNESCO-listed Butrint for a visit to the awe-inspiring archaeological site, the history of which dates back to the ancient Greek and Roman empires.
Reserve your place on a exclusive tour of Corfu, following in the footsteps of the Durrells to explore the island’s beautiful coastline and charming towns.
