Elaine Lancelotti Markovich was born July 1, 1939, in San Francisco, and died suddenly on November 15, 2021, in Napa. Elaine was the only daughter of Rose Serrato and Fred Lancelotti’s marriage. Each of her parents went to other weddings, so Elaine has several step-siblings. Elaine grew up in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco in an Italian family with her grandparents, aunts and uncles nearby. She graduated from St Monica Elementary School, Presentation High School, and received her bachelor’s and teaching degrees from USF, a state master’s from SF and another master’s from University. from Seattle. During her membership in the Rotary Club International, Elaine was appointed Paul Harris Fellow.
She joined the Order of Sisters of the Presentation of Catholic Nuns in 1956 in order to be able to use her gift of spirituality and to teach. She has taught or was the principal of St John Vianney’s San Jose, St Mary’s Gilroy, St Elizabeth’s San Francisco and St Agnes’s San Francisco. She worked at St Patrick’s Sonora for a year before joining St Patrick’s Larkspur Parish in 1985 as a pastoral associate. In Larkspur, she handled the daily tasks as well as the property management of the commercial buildings belonging to the parish.
Elaine left the sisters’ community in 1989 but continued her work at St Patrick until 2005. In October of that year, she sold her condominium to Corte Madera and moved to Napa. On January 6, 2006, she married Tom Markovich, retired and joined the Napa Valley Country Club. At the Club, she reached the rank of captain of the Ladies Golf Group, served on the board of directors and scored a hole-in-one.
When she and Tom had to quit golfing in 2016, she was able to secure a volunteer job at her beloved St Apollinaris Church. There, working almost full time, she assisted Pastor, Father Fergal, priests Father Thomas and Father Pat, Nini and Valentina. She also collaborated with gardeners Chris and David, school principal Oliva, teachers and school staff. She accomplished many tasks, including editing the parish bulletin, helping with the collection count, broadcasting Mass during the pandemic closing, and helping as a usher, all with immense help. joy. In addition, she managed and partially funded the church earthquake repairs, interior painting, replacement of the altar mat, tiles, knees, and sound system. Other work included managing the school and convent painting, sponsoring the CYO basketball team jerseys, and founding the Elaine Markovich Memorial Scholarship Fund for eight-year graduate students who have served their parish.
Elaine found time for hobbies such as swimming, golf, tennis, bocce, and travel. Elaine was able to take cruises through the Greek Islands, Scandinavian capitals and St. Petersburg in Russia (plus golf in Copenhagen), the Caribbean and Alaska. She was also a wonderful pianist and singer. Although fundamentally shy, she was motivated to serve others with her talents and skills, making a difference in the lives of many people.
Elaine is survived by husband Tom, siblings Michael Cronan and wife Tenley, Sherri Sacks DiBasilio and husband Scott, Fred Pheiffer and wife Lynn, Angelo Lancelotti and wife Sonia, Joe Peery and wife Kay and de many nieces, nephews and cousins. Elaine will be missed by all of us.
Elaine’s funeral mass will be held at noon on Saturday, December 4 at St Apollinaris, 3700 Lassen Street Napa, with lunch to follow with a private burial the following week.
