Spring has arrived, which for most is a time of warmer weather, blooming flowers and picnics in the park. However, for the 16 million Britons who suffer from hay fever, it can be a time of runny noses, itchy eyes and avoiding the outdoors as much as possible.
However, a recent Pollen Info study has researched and ranked the best areas of the world for lowest pollen counts where Brits can escape this year. Portugal (especially the Algarve and Madeira), the Canary Islands and the Greek islands such as Corfu and Kos are beautiful gems that will keep allergies at bay. Egypt also ranks among the best places to go for hay fever sufferers.
UK’s largest tour operator TUI has put together a selection of places with low pollen counts, so hay fever sufferers can swap the indoors for the outdoors this allergy season.
Head to the award-winning Algarve where you can rest assured pollen counts stay low due to westerly winds off the sea. Enjoy golden beaches, hidden coves, crescent-shaped bays and rocky coves all along the Algarve coast. For those looking for an action-packed adventure, the Algarve offers a range of diving excursions, as well as bustling golf courses for something a little more relaxed.
The Algarve – Under £650
Seven night vacation in Olhos d’Agua staying at the 4T+ Falesia BLUE CASE half board. Prices from £613, based on two adults sharing, flights from London Gatwick Airport on May 5, 2022 and transfers.
Discover beautiful Madeira, a haven for some of Europe’s finest scenery – with botanical gardens, soaring mountains and rugged, windswept beaches. Highlights include the beautiful Floating Garden (Madeira’s answer to the Garden of Eden), the scenic coastline, the volcanic sands of Ribiera Brava, the capital city of Funchal and the holiday hotspot of Canico De Baixo.
Funchal is made up of colonial buildings, basalt churches and sleepy squares, as well as narrow old town lanes teeming with wine bars and family-run tavernas. Canico De Baixo is a luxury destination with an old parish quarter built around the 18th century and a charming new quarter filled with boutique hotels and clifftop villas.
Madeira – Under £450
Seven nights at 4T TUI BLUE Madeira Gardens on a bed and breakfast basis. Prices from £411 based on two adults sharing, flights from Birmingham Airport on 9th May 2022 and transfers.
Tenerife, Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are perfect for those prone to hay fever, as the pollen season is normally over at the end of May, meaning holidaymakers can catch some rays even before peak season. Tenerife has year-round sunshine, sandy beaches and plenty to do for everyone.
Tenerife – Under £450
Seven nights in Los Gigantes while staying at 4T+ BLUE TUI Los Gigantes half board. Prices from £407, based on two adults sharing, flights from London Gatwick Airport on May 10, 2022 and transfers.
Another resort with a low-pollen option is the Greek island of Kos. With a coastline that stretches over 290 kilometers, the island has its share of beaches. For something a little more lively, take a trip to the town of Kardmena where the streets are full of karaoke bars, pubs and bars. Or opt for Kefalos, a more low-key resort that combines old and new, paved with an idyllic old town and an array of tasty restaurants.
Kos – Under £600
Seven nights at 5T TUI BLUE Atlantica Belvedere Resort half board. Prices from £579, based on two adults sharing, flights from East Midlands Airport on May 18, 2022 and transfers.
Known as the Emerald Isle, Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands covered in cypresses, olive trees and wildflowers, and even then the pollen count remains low. For the quieter resorts of Corfu, head to Gouvia or San Stefanos, where there’s plenty of space on the wide, sandy beaches, as well as candlelit tavernas that tend to be family affairs.
The pace picks up in Sidari and Roda with the introduction of lively karaoke bars and restaurants. That said, there are still plenty of quiet coves on the coast when a bit of downtime is needed.
Corfu – Under £500
Seven nights at 5T TUI BLUE Atlantica Grand Mediterraneo Resort half board. Prices from £488 based on two adults sharing, flights from Cardiff Airport on May 16, 2022 and transfers.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Egypt is up there with one of the best places to go for hay fever sufferers due to the hot climate and lack of pollen-rich plants. The city of Hurghada is the largest settlement in this part of Egypt and is home to dozens of sandstrips, many of which are close to some of the largest coral reefs and shipwrecks.
